Discuss the questions in small groups. Give reasons and examples, and ask follow-up questions.

  1. Which apps take up most of your screen time? What do you enjoy about them?
  2. Do you follow a few accounts or quite a few? How do you choose which ones to follow?
  3. When you have a little free time, do you usually go online or do something else?
  4. Do you ever spend too much time scrolling or watching videos? How do you know when it’s too much?
  5. Is there plenty of useful content in your feed, or very little? Give some examples.
  6. Do you see too many adverts online? How much advertising are you willing to accept for a free service?
  7. Do screens leave you with enough time for sleep, exercise and friends?
  8. Should every teenager have the same screen-time limit? Why or why not?
  9. How much control should parents have over teenagers’ phones and accounts?
  10. What could help someone spend less time online without missing out on things they enjoy?

Agree on a plan

Your school wants advice on teenagers’ screen use. Agree on three recommendations:

  • one for teenagers;
  • one for parents;
  • one for online platforms.

Try to use these phrases naturally:

too much · too many · enough · a few · a little · fewer · less · most · every

Compare your recommendations with another group. Choose the one you think would make the biggest difference.
