If I Were in Charge of Edinburgh …

Step 1 – Think

Work with a partner.

Think about the complaints about Edinburgh. Choose three problems that you think are the most important.

Write down your three ideas.

Step 2 – Make a Plan

Imagine you are in charge of Edinburgh.

Discuss what you would do about each problem.

Try to use the second conditional.

Useful language

Giving ideas

  • If I were in charge of Edinburgh, I’d…
  • If I were the mayor, I’d…
  • I’d probably…
  • I think I’d…

Talking about possible results

  • If there were…
  • If the city had…
  • If people could…
  • If the council…

Ask follow-up questions

After your partner shares an idea, ask at least one question.

For example:

  • Why would you do that?
  • What would happen if you did that?
  • Would everyone agree with your idea?
  • How would local people benefit?
  • Would tourists like that?
  • What other changes would you make?

Report Back

When you finish, decide together:

  • Which idea is the most realistic?
  • Which idea would improve Edinburgh the most?
  • Which idea would be the most difficult to introduce?
