Meet Bob, an American man with some unusual tastes, habits and preferences.
Your challenge is to talk to Bob and find three things that you have in common.
Ask Bob questions about any topics you like. You could talk about food, travel, music, films, hobbies, sport, weather, technology, daily life — or something completely different.
Don’t give up if you disagree! Ask follow-up questions or change the topic until you discover something you both agree about.
Use your agreement language
When you discover something you have in common, try to use expressions from the lesson, such as:
So do I. · Neither do I. · Absolutely. · Exactly. · I couldn’t agree more. · I think you’re right. · I’m with you on that. · Tell me about it. · You can say that again.
Your final challenge
When you have found three things in common, tell Bob what you have discovered.
Then write a short comparison of you and Bob in the comments section at the bottom of this page. Include at least one similarity and one difference, and try to use some of the compare-and-contrast language from the lesson:
both · however · while · whereas · although · in contrast to · nevertheless
I found three things I have in common with Bob. We both like black coffee, spicy food and long train journeys.
Good afternoon!
I had a great conversation with Bob! )
We both love savoury breakfasts, cold pizza with lots of cheese, and putting hot sauce on everything (even in the morning!). I enjoy bitter chocolate, while he prefers pickles instead.
We both prefer slightly burnt toast and bitter coffee without any milk or sugar. I love making coffee in a Turkish coffee pot called a cezve.
We also discovered that we both don’t like flying and enjoy travelling by train. We love visiting local shops and supermarkets to get a better idea of how the locals live.
That’s fantastic, Elmira. Well done.
