Discuss the questions in small groups. Give reasons and examples, and ask follow-up questions.
- Which apps take up most of your screen time? What do you enjoy about them?
- Do you follow a few accounts or quite a few? How do you choose which ones to follow?
- When you have a little free time, do you usually go online or do something else?
- Do you ever spend too much time scrolling or watching videos? How do you know when it’s too much?
- Is there plenty of useful content in your feed, or very little? Give some examples.
- Do you see too many adverts online? How much advertising are you willing to accept for a free service?
- Do screens leave you with enough time for sleep, exercise and friends?
- Should every teenager have the same screen-time limit? Why or why not?
- How much control should parents have over teenagers’ phones and accounts?
- What could help someone spend less time online without missing out on things they enjoy?
Agree on a plan
Your school wants advice on teenagers’ screen use. Agree on three recommendations:
- one for teenagers;
- one for parents;
- one for online platforms.
Try to use these phrases naturally:
too much · too many · enough · a few · a little · fewer · less · most · every
Compare your recommendations with another group. Choose the one you think would make the biggest difference.
