The Old Curiosity Shop

It’s 11 p.m. in Edinburgh. You’re walking home alone when you think you hear someone calling “Help!” from inside The Old Curiosity Shop, a small shop selling antiques and unusual objects.

The shop looks closed, but the front door is slightly open. You call out, but nobody answers. Worried that someone might be hurt, you step inside.

You look around and call out again. You can’t find anyone. Feeling uneasy, you decide to leave. As you walk out, a police officer arrives and stops you.

You haven’t stolen or deliberately damaged anything. Explain why you entered the shop. The officer will present five pieces of evidence that make your story look suspicious. Suggest an innocent explanation for each one.

Use deductions about the past:
• Someone might have…
• The owner could have…
• That must have…
• It can’t have… because…

You don’t know what happened before you arrived. Explain what is possible and what you can reasonably conclude.
