We’ll finally have time to live!

Ophelia’s prediction:

Imagine waking up on Monday and realising you never have to work again. Not because you’ve won the lottery. Because nobody needs a job! Within twenty years, robots and AI will have taken over the work that keeps society running.

Robots will be growing food, building homes and repairing roads. AI agents will be organising everything behind the scenes: accounts, deliveries, administration. All of it! We’ll have created systems that can provide what everyone needs.

And then? We’ll finally have time! People will be painting, composing music, looking after their wellbeing and exploring big philosophical questions. What makes us happy? What gives life meaning? Education will prepare us to live, not just to earn.

Of course, we’ll have to share the wealth. That will be the great political challenge. But imagine what we’ll have gained: a society built around creativity, care and curiosity. For the first time, our time will belong to us!

  1. In twenty years, which jobs will robots and AI have taken over? Which jobs will people still be doing?
  2. In this imagined world without jobs, what will people be doing on an ordinary Monday? Will everyone enjoy that life?
  3. Who will control the machines, and how will society share the wealth they produce?
