Look at the dialogue between Maya and Lewis. Can you work out why the different future forms were used?

Are they:

  • predictions
  • arrangements
  • intentions or plans
  • future continuous
  • future perfect
  • spontaneous decisions about the future

A Heatwave Is Coming

Maya: Have you seen the forecast for next week? They’re saying temperatures are going to reach 34 degrees on Thursday.

Lewis: I know. I think this will be the hottest week we’ve had in years. I’m already dreading it.

Maya: We’re not staying in the flat all day. It turns into an oven in hot weather.

Lewis: True. I’m meeting Tom on Tuesday. He said he was thinking of going to the coast for a few days.

Maya: That sounds sensible. We could do that, but accommodation will probably be expensive once everyone starts booking.

Lewis: Maybe. I’ll check tonight. If we leave it too late, everything will have sold out.

Maya: Good point. I think I’m going to buy a fan as well. Last summer, we kept saying we would but never did.

Lewis: The shops are opening earlier this weekend because they’re expecting more customers.

Maya: That makes sense. Everyone will be trying to stay cool and will be buying fans and ice all week.

Lewis: We should think about food, too. I definitely won’t be cooking much if it’s over thirty degrees.

Maya: Same. I’m going to prepare some cold meals in advance. By Wednesday, I’ll have filled the freezer.

Lewis: What about work? Are you going into the office?

Maya: No, I’m working from home on Thursday and Friday. If the forecast stays the same, most people will be avoiding public transport.

Lewis: I might do the same. Or maybe I’ll take a day off and go somewhere cooler.

Maya: Whatever we decide, next week is definitely going to be memorable.
