Roleplay: Buying a board game

In this speaking activity, you are going to work together to choose a board game to buy. You have six options to choose from.

In your groups, read through the options and discuss the following questions:

  • Does this look like a fun game?
  • Have you ever played a game like this?

When you have discussed the different games, take turns to talk to the Modern Robot shop assistant who will help you select a game.

1. Castle Builders

  • Players: 2–4
  • Age: 10+
  • Time: 45–60 minutes
  • Type: Strategy / building
  • Description: Players compete to build the best medieval castle using limited resources.
  • Why people like it: Easy to learn, but still requires planning
  • Good for: Beginners moving into strategy games

2. Space Traders

  • Players: 3–5
  • Age: 12+
  • Time: 60–90 minutes
  • Type: Strategy / trading
  • Description: You travel between planets, buying and selling goods to make profit.
  • Why people like it: Lots of interaction and negotiation
  • Good for: Groups who enjoy talking and making deals

3. Mystery Mansion

  • Players: 2–6
  • Age: 8+
  • Time: 30–45 minutes
  • Type: Cooperative / mystery
  • Description: Players work together to solve a mystery in a haunted house.
  • Why people like it: Teamwork and storytelling
  • Good for: Families and mixed-level players

4. Kingdom War

  • Players: 2
  • Age: 14+
  • Time: 90–120 minutes
  • Type: Heavy strategy / battle
  • Description: A complex game where two players control armies and fight for territory.
  • Why people like it: Deep strategy and long-term planning
  • Good for: Experienced players

5. Quick Cards

  • Players: 2–6
  • Age: 6+
  • Time: 10–15 minutes
  • Type: Party / fast card game
  • Description: A simple, fast game where players match cards as quickly as possible.
